The Šar Mountains stretch across North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Albania, forming one of the Balkans’ most prominent highland systems. They dominate the landscape of northwestern North Macedonia.

Characterized by steep ridges, high pastures, and glacial features, the range historically limited large-scale settlement while supporting transhumant pastoralism.

The Šar Mountains functioned as a natural frontier under successive empires. Their difficult terrain reduced direct administrative control and preserved strong local cultural patterns.

Today the range is valued for biodiversity, water sources, and its role in shaping regional climate. It remains sparsely populated and environmentally sensitive.
