Lake Ohrid
Intro
Lake Ohrid is a tectonic freshwater lake of exceptional age and depth, located on the border between North Macedonia and Albania. It is central to the historical, ecological, and cultural development of the surrounding region.
Background
The lake was formed through tectonic processes and exceeds 250 meters in depth. Its long geological stability has produced a highly distinctive ecosystem with numerous endemic species. The lake’s shores have supported continuous human settlement for millennia.
History
Throughout antiquity and the medieval period, Lake Ohrid functioned as a stabilizing geographic anchor for religious, educational, and political centers, most notably the city of Ohrid. Control over the lake never translated into strict territorial division, reinforcing its role as a shared civilizational space.
Present Day
Today Lake Ohrid is jointly managed by North Macedonia and Albania and is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both natural and cultural value. Environmental pressure from tourism and development has made conservation a central policy concern.
