Stone Bridge

Cultural
in

The Stone Bridge is Skopje’s most recognisable landmark and its most important internal connector. Built in the Ottoman period, it spans the Vardar River and physically and symbolically links Macedonia Square and the modern city centre with the historic Old Bazaar.

Geography

The bridge occupies the central crossing point of the Vardar in Skopje. It forms the primary pedestrian axis between the western bank, dominated by state buildings and monument-heavy squares, and the eastern bank, where the Ottoman-era bazaar and historic quarters are concentrated.

History

The present structure dates to the mid-15th century and is traditionally attributed to the reign of Ottoman sultan Mehmed II, built on earlier Roman foundations. Over the centuries the bridge survived earthquakes, armed conflicts, and multiple reconstruction campaigns. Its endurance made it a durable symbol of continuity in a city repeatedly reshaped by rupture, including the 1963 earthquake.
