National Museum of Bitola
The National Museum of Bitola is the city’s principal historical and archaeological museum. It occupies the former Ottoman Military Academy, a building that itself embodies Bitola’s role as a military and administrative center during the late Ottoman period.
Geography
The museum is located in central Bitola, within walking distance of Širok Sokak and the historic urban core. Its placement reflects the city’s former institutional center rather than its ancient predecessor at Heraclea Lyncestis.
History
The building originally functioned as an Ottoman military academy and is historically notable as the place where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk studied as a young officer. This connection underscores Bitola’s former status as a key training and command center within the Ottoman Empire. As a museum, the institution became the primary repository for archaeological finds from Heraclea Lyncestis and for material documenting the city’s Ottoman, Balkan Wars, World War I, and Yugoslav periods.
