Historic Center of Lisieux
The center of Lisieux retains its medieval street plan, though most buildings were rebuilt after wartime destruction in 1944.
Geography
Narrow lanes lead off the main market streets, with small squares and the cathedral at the heart.
History
Lisieux’s central district was heavily bombed during the Allied advance in June 1944. Reconstruction in the 1950s preserved the old street grid but replaced much of the built fabric with functional postwar architecture, occasionally incorporating timber-frame pastiches.
Present Day
Today, the area is the main commercial and social hub of Lisieux, with cafés, small shops, and access to the cathedral.
