Asaluyeh Petrochemical Zone (Pars Special Energy Economic Zone)

in

The Pars Special Energy Economic Zone at Asaluyeh on the Persian Gulf coast is the onshore processing centre for the South Pars gas field, the largest in the world. It contains over 20 gas refinery phases and associated petrochemical plants, processing raw gas into LNG, condensate, ethane, propane, LPG, and petrochemical feedstocks for export.

Geography

History

Development of Asaluyeh began in the mid-1990s as Iran initiated the first phases of South Pars development. The village was transformed within a decade into a major industrial city with dedicated port facilities, power plants, desalination units, worker accommodation, and security infrastructure. International oil companies including Total, Shell, and Repsol participated in early phases before sanctions drove them out.

Present Day

Asaluyeh is the most economically critical industrial site in Iran. Its output of natural gas liquids and petrochemicals represents Iran’s largest source of export revenue after crude oil. Chinese companies have become the dominant foreign partners in ongoing South Pars development. The zone is heavily guarded and access is restricted.
