in

The Arak Machine Building Factory, operating under several names including SANAM, is a large state-owned industrial complex in Arak producing heavy machinery, machine tools, industrial equipment, and defence-related manufacturing. It is part of the broader Arak industrial cluster that includes petrochemical production and nuclear facilities.

Geography

History

The factory was established in the mid-20th century as part of Iran’s industrialisation programme and expanded significantly under the Pahlavi era with assistance from European machinery manufacturers. After 1979 the facility was nationalised and redirected toward domestic production of industrial equipment, reducing dependence on imported machinery. It supplied equipment to Iran’s war industries during the Iran-Iraq War.

Present Day

The factory operates under the Ministry of Defence’s industrial network and produces equipment for both civilian and military customers. Its product range includes pressure vessels, heat exchangers, and specialised manufacturing equipment that has applications in the petrochemical, oil, and defence sectors. Sanctions have affected its access to precision tooling and electronic control systems.
