Tetovo is one of North Macedonia’s most demographically and politically significant cities. It functions as the principal urban center of the Albanian-majority northwest and plays a central role in inter-ethnic relations within the state.

The city lies beneath the Šar Mountains, controlling access routes between Macedonia, Kosovo, and Albania. This position historically connected Tetovo to wider Albanian and Ottoman networks rather than to Slavic inland centers.

Under Ottoman rule, Tetovo developed as a regional administrative and religious center. In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, it became a focal point of Albanian political mobilization, including tensions during the 2001 conflict. The city’s institutions reflect parallel cultural and educational structures within the Macedonian state.

Today Tetovo functions as a regional university city and political hub. Its urban identity is shaped by strong Albanian cultural presence, Islamic heritage, and ongoing negotiation of power-sharing arrangements in North Macedonia.
