Évreux lies on the Iton River in southern Normandy. As the seat of a bishopric, it has a long ecclesiastical history centered on its Gothic cathedral.

A Roman settlement preceded the medieval town, which grew around the cathedral from the 10th century. The Hundred Years’ War and WWII both brought significant destruction, followed by periods of rebuilding.

Évreux functions as a departmental capital, balancing administrative, commercial, and cultural roles.
