Odesa was founded in 1794 by decree of Catherine II of Russia. It developed as a multicultural port, a commercial hub, and later an industrial centre during the Soviet period.

Since 2022, Odesa has been repeatedly targeted by missile and drone strikes due to its strategic port, but remains under Ukrainian control and continues to serve as a vital economic centre.
