Formed in 1932, Kyiv Oblast has always been closely tied to the capital. Its towns and rivers have historic roots going back to Kievan Rus.

In 2022, parts of northern Kyiv Oblast (Bucha, Irpin) were occupied during the Russian assault on Kyiv. These were liberated in spring 2022, but scars remain.
