Established in 1932, the oblast has long been a centre of agriculture and trade. The city of Chernihiv dates back to medieval Kievan Rus.

In 2022, Chernihiv was heavily besieged during the initial Russian invasion but remained under Ukrainian control. Border areas continue to face shelling.
