Crimea has a layered history with Greek colonies, the Crimean Khanate, Russian imperial rule, and Soviet integration. It was transferred from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954.

Russia has controlled Crimea since 2014. It is heavily militarised and used as a base for operations in the Black Sea and southern Ukraine.
