Old Bazaar
The Old Bazaar is Skopje’s historic commercial heart and the most intact pre-modern urban district in the city. Located on the north bank of the Vardar, it forms a dense network of streets, shops, mosques, inns, and public buildings directly opposite the modern city centre, connected by the Stone Bridge.
Geography
The bazaar extends from the Vardar riverfront near the Stone Bridge uphill toward Skopje Fortress. Its position integrates river crossing, market activity, and defensive high ground into a compact and walkable urban zone. Administratively it lies mainly within Čair Municipality, with edges touching Centar.
History
Written sources refer to commercial activity in this area from at least the 12th century, but the bazaar took its recognizable form during the Ottoman period. As Skopje developed into a regional trading hub, the district filled with mosques, caravanserais (hans), baths, and guild-based workshops. Despite earthquakes, warfare, and modern redevelopment pressures, significant portions of the historic street pattern and building stock have survived and are now legally protected.
