The Pelagonia Plain is a wide lowland basin extending across southern North Macedonia into northern Greece. It has supported dense human settlement since antiquity and remains central to regional agriculture and food production.

Encircled by mountain ranges including Baba and Nidže, the plain benefits from rich soils and relatively stable climatic conditions. Its openness contrasts with the surrounding Balkan highlands, making it a natural focal point for settlement and movement.

Pelagonia hosted important ancient and medieval settlements and remained a strategic agricultural zone under Byzantine and Ottoman administration. Control of the plain was closely tied to regional power due to its productive capacity.

Today the Pelagonia Plain anchors cities such as Bitola and Prilep and remains one of North Macedonia’s primary agricultural regions. It continues to shape population distribution and regional economic stability.
