Xinhai Revolution

1911

regime-changeRevolution

The Xinhai Revolution overthrew the Qing Dynasty and ended over two millennia of imperial rule, leading to the establishment of the Republic of China.

Background

Accumulated failures of late Qing reform, fiscal weakness, regional militarization,
and the rise of revolutionary networks converged in 1911. An uprising in Wuchang
triggered a cascade of provincial secessions. Lacking loyal forces and legitimacy,
the Qing court negotiated abdication rather than prolonged civil war.

Legacy

– Abolished dynastic monarchy in China
– Established the Republic of China
– Opened a prolonged period of political fragmentation and conflict
