The First Sino-Japanese War exposed the failure of Qing modernization and marked the transfer of regional leadership in East Asia from China to Japan.
Background
Competition over influence in Korea escalated into open conflict between Qing China
and Meiji Japan. Despite decades of self-strengthening reforms, Qing naval and military
forces proved ineffective against Japan’s modernized army and fleet. The war revealed
deep institutional weaknesses in Qing governance, command structure, and industrial
capacity.
Legacy
– Ended China’s traditional suzerainty over Korea
