The Long March
1934-1935
leadership-consolidation–strategic-retreat–survival
The Long March was a strategic retreat by Chinese Communist forces that ensured the survival of the CCP and elevated Mao Zedong as its dominant leader.
Background
Under sustained military pressure from Nationalist encirclement campaigns, Communist
forces abandoned their Jiangxi base and undertook a year-long retreat across some of
China’s most difficult terrain. The march resulted in massive losses but preserved the
core of the Red Army. Internal debates during the retreat led to a decisive shift in
leadership and strategy, favoring guerrilla warfare and rural mobilization.
Legacy
– Ensured the physical survival of the CCP
– Established Mao Zedong as paramount leader
– Became a foundational myth of Communist legitimacy and sacrifice
