First Five-Year Plan and Socialist Transformation
1953-1957
economic-restructuring–period
Between 1953 and 1957, China implemented its First Five-Year Plan, restructuring land, industry, and finance along socialist lines and establishing centralized economic planning.
Background
Following the civil war and the Korean War, the new state shifted from wartime
mobilization to planned economic development. Land reform dismantled the landlord
system, private industry was nationalized, and Soviet models guided industrialization,
particularly in heavy industry and infrastructure.
Legacy
– Established the foundations of a planned economy
– Eliminated private ownership in key sectors
– Created conditions for later mass mobilization campaigns
